How Can a Chiropractor Help with Whiplash or Whiplash Symptoms?
So many people hear about chiropractic and have their first experience with a chiropractor after experiencing a car accident. Whiplash occurs after excessive hyperextension, hyperflexion, or extreme rotation of the neck occurs. These movements affect the soft tissue in the neck and back and can result in short-term and long-term pain. Whiplash symptoms typically subside within 3 months, however, possible long-term damage can be done by then and subluxations can become a normal part of the spine. If whiplash symptoms occur for more than 3 months, it is considered chronic whiplash.
How Can a Chiropractor Help with Whiplash or Whiplash Symptoms?
Because chiropractors have extensively studied the neck and back more than any other doctor, they are the best option when it comes to seeking treatment for whiplash. While bony or soft tissue damage can occur from whiplash, oftentimes the injury is related solely to spinal subluxations, or misalignments which can be corrected.
A treatment plan depends on the severity of a whiplash injury. The most common chiropractic technique is spinal manipulation. A chiropractor may also use other therapies to help reduce neck inflammation caused by whiplash which can include electrical stimulation therapy.
It is important to note that while seeking immediate treatment for whiplash symptoms is recommended, sometimes the onset of symptoms may be delayed. Oftentimes general soreness after a motor vehicle accident overwhelms other more pointed symptoms, such as those of whiplash. However, if you experience a car accident (or another injury) that results in neck and back pain, be sure to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor right away. Delaying treatment will lead to delayed resolution of symptoms and pain, and it can even make the pain more severe down the road.
