Headaches come and go and have many different causes. Some of the reasons could be from stress, lack of sleep, allergies, neck trauma, car accidents and more. Some causes may be unknown.

A common denominator of headaches has to do with cervical spine anatomy, mostly the upper part of the neck. There are seven cervical vertebrae, the top three rise to three nerves that travel into the head. These nerves share pain nucleus with the trigeminal nerve, which can route pain signals to the brain.

Depending on the nerve, the location of the headache varies. For example, the greater occipital travels up the back of the head to the top. From there it can refer pain to the forehead and/or behind the eye.

When the lesser occipital nerve is irritated, the pain travels to the back of the head, while irritation to the greater auricular nerve results to pain just above the ear. When a nerve is pinched, the altered sensation can include pain, numbness, tingling, burning and much more. These are put into the category of cervicogenic headaches and as the same implies, the origin of pain arises from the neck.

A 2013 study reviewed CGH found that chiropractic manipulations and mobility improved pain, disability, and function. In fact, one study of 127 migraine sufferers reported fewer attacks and less medication required by those who received chiropractic care.

The good news is that manipulation is very safe and effective and it is a great idea to get prevention adjustments as well!
