In most vehicle collisions whiplash is very common and it just so happens that the best medicine is to try to avoid it!

Some tips to help with that would be, defensive driving, don’t eat, fiddle with the radio, use your cell phone, and keep your eyes on the road! According to an estimation by the National Safety Council, more than 1.6 million crashes are caused by cell phone use and you are four times more likely to crash while talking on your phone. In 2011, 23% of collisions involved cell phone use and 21% involved people between the ages of 16 to 19 were fatal. While talking on the phone increases your risk by 30%, texting increases that to 2,300%!

About half of young drivers have seen their parents drive and talk on a cell phone, and even 15% have witnessed them texting and driving. One in five drivers confess to surfing the web while driving and will “justify” it with excuses such as, “the phone is held near the windshield for more visibility,” and “I increase the following distance.”

So how can you avoid these bad habits for you or your children? Parents can “drive Cam” their kids’ cars or yourself. This is a device and app that will provide real time feedback with video. Teens and parents can also take the text free driving pledge at “textinganddrivingsafety.com.” With every bad habit it takes a little time to break, so each time you find yourself actively exercising that, make sure you are aware and stop right at that moment, each time you put the phone down it will get easier and easier!
