Back pain can affect us at any age really. Chiropractors see patients of all ages, ranging from babies to 90+ year-olds!
In a young adult, facet syndrome and disk derangement are common conditions, while this can still occur in an older adult, it can become less common after the age of 60. This is because the disks in our spine will become more dehydrated as we grow in age. When this dehydration progresses, the disks narrow and bulge outwards. Therefore, in 60+ year-olds, disk related pain is not usually from the soft liquid center herniating through the tough outer layer as it occurs in the younger patient. It is usually from a combination of conditions. These conditions combine together and end up with the narrowing of the openings through which the nerve roots exit the spine.
Some of the conditions that can contribute are, narrowing ad bulging of the disk, osteoarthritis, or spurring extending off the vertebral endplates where the disk attaches, facet joint arthritis resulting in, “hypertrophy” or enlargement, calcification, and more. The Neuroforamen can narrow to the point of pinching a never and this causes great discomfort. This condition is called, “spinal stenosis.” Classic symptoms associated include low back pain and stiffness. This also causes gradual reduction in the amount of time that people can comfortably continue walking. After a certain amount of time, mobility can become more and more limited.
Chiropractic Care can greatly help in increasing your mobility, comfort and slow this process down. Give Chiropractic a try as it can be a very helpful preventative for back pain and depletion of your back!
