Why does our balance ability Rapidly decrease over the years?
Did you know that the number one cause of injuries after the age of 70 is falling? This is because as we age, we lose balance and bone density. This combination can result in fractures of the vertebra, commonly in the lower back region.
The “normal” amount of time we are able to stand on one foot with our eyes closed between the ages of 20-59 is 25 seconds, 60-69 is 10 seconds and 70-79 is 4 seconds. According to this piece of information, over time we rapidly lose our ability to balance, especially when we close our eyes. You can practice balance by standing on one foot with your eyes open and count in seconds how long you are able to hold that position, then close your eyes and count again. You can try this a few times and get better! It may be easy for a gymnast but for the rest of us we may need to start including some “balance exercises” into our daily routine.
Why does our balance ability Rapidly decrease over the years? This is mostly because as we age, we become less active and we are less interested in doing activities that require balance. Usually there isn’t that daily routine of coming home from school with scrapes and bruises and grass stains on our clothes. We aren’t so invincible in our older days! If you are experiencing low back pain and little balance ability, you may want to visit a chiropractor, go for brisk walks in the mornings or evenings, ride your bike, and stretch!
